Thatcham categories explained

Thatcham Research assesses vehicle security products, and many UK insurers refer to its categories. S7 covers professionally fitted tracking systems; S5 adds features such as driver identification and is often asked for on high-value or high-risk vehicles. A tracker only counts as Thatcham-approved when it is a certified product fitted by an approved installer, usually with a certificate for your insurer.

Inexpensive self-fit trackers – battery, OBD or self-wired units such as the PAJ range, Quantum3 Self-Fit or Monimoto – are not Thatcham-certified. They can still help you locate a vehicle, but they will not satisfy a policy condition that names S5 or S7. Ask your insurer which category, if any, your policy requires before you buy.
