Installing an OBD car GPS tracker.

An OBD tracker uses the vehicle’s diagnostic connector for a simple plug-in installation. Check the exact device’s compatibility and the connector location first. Easy access helps setup but can also make a tracker easier to find and remove.

What to check

Make sure the fitted unit does not obstruct pedals, trim or safe movement. Read the manufacturer’s power-use and parked-vehicle guidance, especially for vehicles left unused for long periods. Do not assume an OBD device has the same backup power as a battery tracker.

Before you rely on it

Activate the service, check a location update and test the relevant movement or power notifications. Compare the correct model number and seller when buying: a similarly named listing can be another generation. For concealed installations, consider whether a wired model installed by a professional better suits the task.
