The limitations of subscription-free trackers.

Avoiding a provider subscription can mean accepting a different tracking method. A Bluetooth tag is inexpensive to maintain, but it cannot provide its own mobile GPS updates. An own-SIM device shifts setup and connectivity management to the user.

What to check

Check coverage, update behaviour, app support and the full cost of data or SMS. A prepaid service can still expire and need renewal. A low purchase price is less helpful if the device does not supply updates where and when the task requires them.

Before you rely on it

Write down the essential requirement before shopping: nearby item finding, occasional location checks or frequent remote updates. Choose the technology that meets that requirement, then compare ownership costs. “No subscription” is a payment description, not a promise of unlimited tracking performance.
